Infrastructure Projects Boost Economic Recovery

July 10, 2009

Statement by John Horsley, AASHTO Executive Director, responding to remarks made by House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Republicans at a press conference this morning.

“We fully understand that the economic recession is causing considerable pain in all areas of the country, but the investments being made by our state DOTs in transportation projects through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are part of the solution, not the problem.

In the five months that have past since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law, $16.7 billion in projects have been approved for funding.

Nearly two thousand projects are currently under construction in 46 states, the District of Columbia and on federal lands. These projects are already creating thousands of jobs and more are being added everyday as additional roads get
repaired and bridges get fixed.”

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is the “Voice of Transportation” representing State Departments of Transportation in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. AASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association serving as a catalyst for excellence in transportation.
